Captain Matthias J. Murphy, Jr., Bristol Police Dept. Retired, age 80 of Court Street, Bristol, died Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Silver Creek Manor, Bristol, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Antonetta (Maturi) Murphy, his wife of 49 years, who preceded him in death in January of 2006. Born and raised in Fall River, MA, he was a son of the late Matthias J. and Margaret (Reagan) Murphy, Sr. Educated in the Fall River School System, he served on the Bristol Police Department for 22 years, retiring as Captain in 1987. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and a member of the local and state Fraternal Order of Police for many years. Matt always enjoyed the company of visitors, traveling with Annette and friends, his weekly card games with buddies and trips to Foxwood. He will be remembered for his blue eyes, hearty laugh and the love he had for his family and friends. Most of all, nothing brought him greater joy than being with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is survived by three children; Donna M. McKenna (Robert) of Bristol, Matthias J. Murphy, III (Lori) of Hobe Sound, FL, and Melissa A. Ylizarde (Jason) of Conroe, TX, four grandchildren; Robert W. McKenna, Jr. (Julie), Rutland, VT, Erin E. McKenna (Brian Hall) of Tacoma, WA, Meredith A. McKenna (Michael Bove) of Bristol and Emily P. Murphy in North Carolina, four great-grandchildren; Logan McKenna, Harper McKenna, Sawyer Bove and Nash Bove, two sisters; Margaret Curry of Manchester, CT, and Rose Marie Swenson (Wayne), Fall River, and two brothers; William F. Murphy (Cynthia) and John R. Murphy (Lucy) both of Fall River. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers; Paul B. and Owen W. Murphy. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 9:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State Street, Bristol. Burial will follow in North Burial Ground, Hope Street, Bristol. Visiting hours will be Friday, April 27, 2018 from 4:00-7:00 PM.
