MOM'S EULOGY
by Joyce M. Bryant
My first memory of my mother was her wearing her Newport Creamery waitress uniform. She worked there for several years until Hurricane Carol swept the Creamery away. After, Mom worked in a jewelry factory, in a building that withstood future hurricanes.
I guess you could call my mother a work-a-holic. I remember her always working whether it was home or outside the home. My father worked in the construction business and as good as that job was, it was known as a seasonal job, so there were weeks when he didn't work at all; but mom always worked.
One of the things mom loved to do was sew. When she was in High School she saved enough money to buy herself a Singer Sewing Machine for $25.00. It was wooden and it operated by a foot pump. We still have that old Singer in our garage, and I bet it still works.
Mom had a dream to become a dress designer, but that wasn't meant to be, other than making me school uniforms. But she did find it profitable to make custom window curtains for family and friends. She was quite successful at it too. Of course she still worked full time in a jewelry factory during the day, making the curtains at night when we were asleep. The woman never seemed to stop working.
When making curtains was no longer popular, she began to baby sit for working family and friends. It was another way to earn money and stay at home while we went to school. I would guess mom probably diapered a few people who are sitting in this church right now. I know because sometimes she would let me help her.
As I said, Mom and Dad were always working, but my brother and I were never neglected because we were lucky enough to be looked after by our grandparents, Vovo and Avo Alves; and trust me there isn't anything better than to be cared for by devoted Portuguese grandparents who are experts at spoiling grandchildren.
My parents gave us a good life growing up because we were surrounded by loving grandparents, aunts, uncles and terrific cousins to play with and enjoy. So please allow me to pay tribute to our wonderful extended family. Those who are still with us and those who are now in Heaven. Thank you for the love, and especially to our Mother, Mary.
