Mr. Cosmo R. Castigliego, age 93 of Bristol, passed away Friday, March 21, 2014 at the VA Medical Center, Providence. He was the beloved husband of Mary (Lepre) Castigliego, his wife of 65 years. Born and raised in Bristol and a lifelong resident, he was a son of the late Matteo and Luigina (Murgo) Castigliego.
He was a World War II veteran proudly serving in the US Coast Guard aboard the WPG-49 Northland in the Northeast Greenland Patrol. The Northland was awarded 2 battle stars during the War. Cosmo was a fish vendor for 55 years, selling to area restaurants and peddling fish from his truck in all types of weather on Federal Hill, where he was a local icon. He loved spending time working around his yard and home.
In addition to his wife Mary, he is survived by four children, Louise Stolasz (Ted), Lorraine Lucas (Mike), Paul Castigliego (Linda) and Karen Terra (Joseph). He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Jeff Stolasz (Melissa), Melissa O'Connell (Ed), Beth Poland (Rod), Paul Castigliego, Jr. (Lauren), Kim Castigliego-Butera (Dave), Erin McKenna, Kyle, Brad and Brittany Terra, nine great grandchildren, Katelyn, Abbigail, Sasha, Colin, Ryan, Teddy, Sara, Stella and Chloe. He was the brother of Gaetano Castigliego, Sue Salcone, Domenic Castigliego and Marie Pirri, all of Bristol.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Nicholas, Paul, Damiano and Matteo Castigliego and sisters, Annie Salvaggi and Lucy Del Piano.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial, Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State Street, Bristol. Burial with Military Honors will follow in North Burial Ground, Hope Street, Bristol. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
