I am so sorry for the loss of your son. As a military brat, I felt the need to make it my goal this year to honor and remember one of our fallen every day. Today I honor First Sergeant McKenna and will be sharing the information I find on my FB page for others to remember him as well. My son, who was a student at Roger Williams attended the Bristol parade many years. I am sure your son enjoyed that day so much. Thank you again for the sacrifice that your family has given. I would have been honored to have called him my friend. Peace ~ Suzanne

I still remember like it was yesterday Andrew driving straight to my house from RI after placing his brother to rest. We had just started getting to know each other but the heartache of both of us losing someone so dear to us forged a bond. Even ten years later Andrew and I still talked on a regular basis. He never failed in calling me on my husband's angel anniversary or his bday. He knew those days we're hard for me. He always checked in on my kids, too. I still remember one night I had some errands to do and he kept the kids for me. I got caught up in traffic but when I got to his house he had actually cooked dinner, had the kids set the table, and was waiting for me. He was so excited that he cooked, and made veggies. Lol. He was such a loving, generous, man. He is missed. Every single day. And, so very much loved.

To The McKenna Family,

We are so sorry for the loss of your son Andrew. As members of the Bristol Fourth of July Committee, we were so proud that he was able to receive the American Flag for having traveled the farthest at our Patriotic Exercises. He was a true American Hero that gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom. May he rest in peace. Our prayers and thoughts are with you during this very difficult time.

My sincerest condolences over the untimely loss of your son. I was informed this is the second loss for you and your family. Words can not express my sadness over all you have had to endure. However like two of my best friends who died in Vietnam years ago, your son and those Marines did what they loved doing. I realize those thoughts can not take the pain away but it time you will be left with only fondest memories. We are all by your side as you begin recovery. None of us, myself in particular who does my best to honor all veterans will never forget the sacrifice brave men like your sin and brave woman have made for all of us.

To Peter and Carol:

Elaine and I are so sorry for your loss with the passing of your son. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. Peter was a true American hero and his passing was a great loss for you and your family, our community, and our nation. We want to thank Peter for his service to this country and his ultimate sacrifice. Just as a side, your grave site in St. Mary’s Cemetery is right next to our grave site. My mother and father (Ralph & Filomena Ferrara) are buried there. We told mom and dad that a true American hero will be laid to rest right next to them; that they should be proud and to watch over him just as he watched over all of us during his honorable service. You can bet they will.

Ralph & Elaine Ferrara

As I sit from afar and read all of the touching tributes and see all of the wonderful pictures dedicated to Sgt. McKenna, my heart aches for his family and the tight-knit community that I love and dearly miss. My deepest heartfelt sympathies go out to the McKenna family and to those that knew him best. I wish I could be at home not only to mourn along with you, but also to celebrate Sgt. Mckenna's life with our community and friends. The love and support shown by everyone in this difficult time makes me proud to be part of such a fantastic community and I’m honored to say that I had the pleasure to know such a great man and soldier who gave his life for the betterment of others. Sgt. McKenna, thank you for your service, Sir. You will not be forgotten. RIP, bro.

Dear Carol and Peter,

I have been thinking about you since hearing the tragic news about your Andrew and remembering our conversation about Patrick a few years ago at the Navy Exchange. I was remembering the good times, back in the day, when the kids were small and you helped me with Sarah, getting her on and off the school bus and taking the kids to feed the ducks and sharing our back yards for years! Life seemed so much simpler back then. I do remember Andrew loved everything "Army", even as 6 year old! I can still picture him with his camo hat on, smiling with two front teeth missing. One thing that no one can take away from you are your memories that you keep close to your heart. All I can do is send good thoughts to you of Andrew and Patrick and hope that one day you can find some peace knowing that your sons loved you so much and they were good boys. As I write this, I just can't imagine how hard this is for you and I wish with all my heart that I could take some of your pain away. Please know that you are in my prayers and I will get in touch with you soon. Love.....Beth Grimes (with Michael, Sarah and Alex), (formerly of Sullivan Lane)

I served under 1SG Drew McKenna for most of the last year. And while he always just told me to call him "Drew", he never failed to make me feel like he was my leader, and not in a bad way, but in a way that he never had to say in words. In a way that always made me know without a doubt that no matter what danger we faced, or the enemy could throw at us, he would make sure all of us would come home alive. He was and is the great kind of man who will live through eternity who inspires others around him and makes them better just through knowing him. His fearlessness, courage, and great leadership in battle will never be forgotten or lost upon those he lead. My prayers are with his Family. Thank you for the sacrifice your family has made from a Soldier who directly benefited from Drew's leadership, bravery, and selflessness. I will never forget him nor pass up the chance to tell of his greatness and bravery. 1SG You will never be forgotten!

"So the warrior now returns to native soil and rightly earns
The great respect to one so young, though sadness stills the waiting throng,
While flowers strew the path he takes, as the carriage slowly makes
A final turning to allow the veterans standing there to show
The soldiers pride, a silent, mute, proud and respectful last salute."

Rest easy Andrew.
