Tribute

Maria E. Mello, 82, of Woodlawn Avenue passed away Monday July 20, 2020 at Rhode Island Hospital.

For the last 58 years she was the loving wife of Joseph O. Mello.

Born on the Island of Faial, Azores she was the daughter of the late Joao and Rosa (Furtado) Medina.

A Bristolian for the last 61 years she was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church. She and her family immigrated to America after the volcano eruption of 1957 on her island.Maria worked for many years as a seamstress at American Tourister. She took great pride in being a former Vice-President of the workers union there. Maria loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. On her free time Maria enjoyed traveling, she and her husband traveled back to the Azores many times over the years. Maria and Joseph enjoyed going out for lunch every day. She also enjoyed meeting for coffee with her friends on a weekly basis. Maria was also a member of the Knights of Corte Reais where she served as Secretary for 10 years and The Portuguese Continental Union Lodge 54. 

Maria was predeceased by her parents and her siblings, Fernando Pacheco, Henry Medina, and Anthony “Ruby” Medina.

In addition to her husband Joseph Maria is survived by her children; Joanne M. Mello of Bristol, Paul J. Mello (Edineia) of Fall River, and Michael J. Mello. She leaves behind four grandchildren; Joshua A. Mello, Alexander J. Mello, Helio Matos, and Daniel Matos. She will also be missed by her siblings; John Medina, Mario Pacheco, and Isaura Cabral. Her loss will be felt by many nieces and nephews and her many friends and acquaintances.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday July 24, 2020 at 11 AM inside St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood Street, Bristol. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol.
