Frederick A. (Fred) Owen of South Kingstown RI passed peacefully in Warren R.I.
Born in Springfield MA, he was pre-deceased by his parents, Alberta and Richard Owen, wife, Betty I. Owen and former spouse Betty J. Owen.
Fred leaves a brother, Richard (Barbara) Owen and was predeceased by his sister, Pamela Owen and brother, Edward Owen.
At the age of 19, Fred enlisted into the United States Navy. He then went on to marry his childhood sweetheart Betty Jane, where they would be stationed in California , Hawaii and in 1969 stationed with their young children to Newport Naval Station , Newport R.I. while Fred taught Communications at the Naval War College.
Fred went on several tours that took him around the world, he served during the Vietnam War, several tours to Greece, Hawaii, California that included deployment on several Destroyers Newman K Perry (DD-883) and Richard L Page (DD-5). Fred then rose in rank to RMC, specializing in Submarine Warfare, Sonar and Communications. Honorably serving the USN for 24 years and subsequently was employed as a Communication Engineer with Purvis until his retirement.
He had a very easy going personality and would make friends where ever he went. Being a prankster, he always had a joke or a story to tell. He was so loved by his family, especially his children, Debra , Fred and Jenny who took great comfort in being able to surround their father daily with love and compassion in the past months during his illness. He also leaves his Comrades in Arms, Veterans Ed Woodbury who served in Vietnam with Fred and Neil Carbery.
He was the loving father of Debra Pepper Vistro Mulvey (Wayne) , Fredrick R. Owen (Nancy) and Jennifer Owen Sullivan Lade (Mark). Poppy to Jeffrey M Sullivan, Jr., Meghin M Sullivan, Heather Johnson, Mark Johnson, Kelsey Johnson, Chris Pepper, Jamie Pepper, Donnie Vistro, Romie Vistro and Great Poppy to Paisley A Martens. Nephew and nieces, Timothy Owen (deceased), Cary Smart and Tracey Renna of Fresno California. Former Sister in Law’s, Shirley LaMountain (deceased) , Sandra Wise (Robert), and former Prankster in Law, Albert (Skippy) LaMountain. Also survived by several beloved nieces and nephews.
Our family is greatly appreciative and give many thanks to Grace Barker , a private nursing facility located in Warren RI.
Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol Wednesday August 18, 2021 at 8:00 AM with a Committal Prayer Service with military honors at 10 AM in St. Mary’s Episcopal Cemetery, 324 E. Main Street, Portsmouth. Visitation will be held from 8:00-9:00 AM.
