Theresa Cayer

Mrs. Theresa Cayer, 92, of Middletown, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, September 23, 2023 with her family at her side. Theresa was born in Pomz, Hungary in 1931. She was the daughter of the late Janos and Anna (Muhr) Hilbert. Theresa attended local schools in Pomz until she and her family were forced to immigrate to Germany after the Communists took control of Hungary at the end of World War II. They settled in Weiler, West Germany, and she eventually married Lester Dunton, who was a soldier in the U.S. Army. When Lesters enlistment was up and he returned home, she immigrated to the United States, where she later became a citizen. Lester passed away suddenly in 1964 at the age of 29. Several years later she married Joseph Cayer. Theresa was initially employed as a housekeeper, and later at Raytheon Company in Andover as a cable-maker. Theresa had a lifelong love for animals and gardening, and she was a communicant of St. Marys Church in Bristol for the years that she lived there. She was a modest, happy person and enjoyed laughing and greeting everyone. Theresa was pre-deceased by her husband Joseph, her husband Lester, her parents Janos and Anna, two brothers Nikolaus and Christian, a step brother Franz, a brother-in-law Josef Schadt, and many stray animals that she provided a home for. She is survived by her daughter Kyrsten (Michael) Funk of Middletown, her sister Gisela Schadt of Obrigheim, Germany, her niece Monika Mller, and her neighbors and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to attend an In-House service on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 11 AM at Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol. She will be laid to rest with her husband Joseph at North Burial Ground, Hope Street, Bristol. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Potter League of Middletown, RI.
