The Rev. Frederick C. Gilbert

The Rev. Frederick C. Gilbert, age 74, Pastor Emeritus of the First Baptist Church of Bristol, of 1030 Hope Street, Bristol, died Friday, January 11, 2008 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Betty C. (Cox) Gilbert, his wife of 54 years. Born in Indianapolis, IN, he was a son of the late V.G. and Mildred A. (Jiles) Gilbert. A resident of Bristol for 26 years, he previously resided in Coventry and Cranston. Rev. Gilbert received his Bachelor of Divinity Degree from the Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, IN. Rev. Gilbert was a Social Worker for the State of RI, Dept. for Children, Youth and Families for 28 years, retiring in 1998. He was the Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Bristol for 20 years, retiring in 2004. He previously served as the Youth Minister for the Greenville Baptist Church, Greenville, RI for several years. During his many years of Ministry, he officiated at hundreds of weddings and funerals and previously served churches in Alabama, Indiana and Illinois. He was a long time member of the board of directors and board secretary for Whitmarsh House in Providence since the early 1970s. He co-founded ECHO in Bristol County and was a former member of the Bristol Rotary. He was well known for his talent of dry stone wall building, building some 58 walls throughout Rhode Island. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Lisa C. Dimbleby of Bristol, L. Lynn Poirier of Chepachet, Christine L. Larson of West Palm Beach, FL, three sons; V. Brent Gilbert of Westerly, J. Bradley and Brian C. Gilbert, both of Bristol, a sister, Joyce A. White of Orlando, FL, his mother-in-law, Rubye C. Cox of Bristol and his brother-in-law, J. Carlyle Cox of Gainesville, GA, who was Fred's college roommate, nineteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary J. Gilbert. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service in celebration of his life, Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 10:00 AM in the First Baptist Church, 250 High Street, Bristol. Burial will follow in North Burial Ground, Hope Street, Bristol. Visiting hours Tuesday, 4:00-8:00 PM in the First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 250 High Street, Bristol, RI 02809 or to the Whitmarsh House, Attn.: Bro. John McHale, P.O. Box 72832, Providence, RI 02907. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Sansone Funeral Home, Bristol.
