DelPiano, Samuel, age 82, of D-2 Bristol Woods Drive, Bristol, died Sunday, September 16, 2007 at the Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Lorraine (Bouchard) DelPiano. Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, he was the son of the late Michael DelPiano, Sr. and Blanche (Malafronte) DelPiano. He was a graduate and president of Colt Memorial High School, Class of 1942. He was the recipient of “The Walsh Memorial Medal”, the highest award presented to the graduate of his class. A three year varsity athlete in Baseball and Basketball, Sam was the Center Fielder on the 1941 State Championship Team. He received state honors in both sports. In 1942 he became the teams leading Pitcher and then the Tim ONiel Amatuer League leading pitcher. He then turned professional and pitched for the Carrolton Hornets, an affiliate of the New York Yankees. He was inducted into the Bristol Hall of Fame in 1985. A veteran of WWII he served in the US Coast Guard as a signalman 2nd class aboard the USS Might, a Coast Guard Frigate which escorted convoys from New York. Following the war he owned the Family Cleaners and later became a representative of the Prudential Insurance Company retiring in 1981. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Bristol. He was a member of the V.F.W., the Bristol County Lodge of Elks and the Swansea Country Club. Besides his wife he leaves a daughter Debby and her husband Junie Ferro of Bristol, two stepdaughters, Deborah Murphy of Middletown and Cheryl Dowty of Fall River, MA, a stepson, Keith Dowty of Middletown and four grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, two sisters, Lucy Grabert of Hixon, TN and Theresa Proto of Bristol, a brother, Tony DelPiano of Honolulu, HI. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Angie and Dottie DelPiano and a brother, Michael DelPiano. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Thursday, September 20, 2007 at 9:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State Street, Bristol. Burial with Military Honors will follow in North Burial Ground, Hope St., Bristol. Visiting hours Wednesday, 4:00-8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Stroke Assoc., 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
