Rose Digati Simmel -Lifelong Bristolian Rose Digati Simmel, 86, formally ofUnion and Cottage Streets, Bristol, diedpeacefully July 23, 2009 at Silver Creek Manor. Born in Bristol, December 28, 1922, she was the daughter of Sicilian immigrants Leonardo and Rosaria Digati. Rosewas a 1941 graduate of Colt Memorial High School and a 1943 graduate of Johnson and Wales Business School, where she studied under thelegendary Miss Johnson and Miss Wales. A career girl for over 40 years, she was a switchboard operator for Dixon and New England Telephone where she assisted with the assignment of 'CLifford-3' numbers. She was employed for many years at Naval Station Newport where she was a budget clerk for both the Naval Hospital & NUSC, where she was popular as an organizer of theater bus trips for Welfare and Rec.Rose loved dogs, going to the 'Cape', Broadway musicals, and walking. She played piano by ear- herfavorites: 'Speak Softly Love' and 'Hey Jude'. She was known for her distinctive voice. She was a former communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.She was one of the first Hereshoff Marine Museum volunteers. She is survived by nieces, nephew, grand nieces, and cousins. She was wife of the late Vincent Simmel and sister of the late John Digati, Santo Di Gati, Anna Digati, Leonard Digati, and Joseph Digati. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Monday, July 27, 2009 at 10:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State Street, Bristol. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bristol. Visitation will be Monday morning only from 10:00- 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers a gift can be made to Alzheimers Association -RI Chapter, 245 Waterman Street, Suite 306 Providence RI 02906 www.alz.org.
