MULLEN ROBERT J. (“Uncle Bob”), age 87, of Franklin Court, Bristol, died peacefully Dec. 6, 2009 at Evergreen Health Center, East Providence. Born July 14, 1922 in Newport, he was the son of the late Peter F. Mullen and Agnes (Lemire) Mullen. Uncle Bob was a WWII veteran, serving with the US Coast Guard and US Navy. He served as a machinists mate on board the USS Centaurus for three years, which ship received six battle commendations in the Pacific Theater, including the invasion of Okinawa. After discharge, Bob worked for many years at his fathers liquor store in Washington Park, Providence, and was also employed at JemCo Pet Supply and the URI bookstore. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and Providence College basketball. He is survived by his nephew, James J. Mullen and his wife, Christine of Bristol and his niece, Judith M. Connorton of New York City and her husband, John. He is also survived by 11 grandnephews and grandnieces and 8 great grandnephews and great grandnieces. He was the brother of the late Francis E. Mullen of Warwick and uncle of the late Ruth E. Silvestri of East Greenwich. His funeral will be held fromthe Sansone Funeral Home,192 Wood Street, Bristol, at 10:00 AM with aMass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in St. Marys Church, 330 Wood Street, Bristol. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Anns Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours,Thursday, 3:00-7:00 PM.
