Mrs Shirley Anne Costa

Mrs. Shirley A. (Surette) Costa, age 86 of Peck Avenue, Bristol, died Saturday, August 3, 2024 at Silver Creek Manor, Bristol. She was the wife of the late Edward W. Costa, her husband of 46 years, who preceded her in death in Sept. 2004. Born in Malden, MA, she was a daughter of the late Peter E. and Margaret M. (Melanson) Surette. Shirley was a graduate of Cumberland, RI High School, Class of 1956. She was awarded a performance scholarship to Rhode Island School of Design, where she met her husband. Shirley received her Bachelors Degree in Education from Rhode Island College. A resident of Bristol for 66 years, Shirley was Elementary Teacher and Remedial Reading Specialist for the Bristol School Department for 26 years, retiring in 1999. She was a communicant and an active volunteer at St. Marys Church, Bristol with their Emmaus Group, which she was one of the founders, and Church Bazaar with her hand painted crafts. She loved spending time painting and reading. She is survived by two children, Alan D. Costa (Diana Costa) of Goldsboro, NC and Beth A. Costa (Cheryl A. Allen) of Seekonk, MA, a grandson, David A. Costa of Bristol, and a sister, Elizabeth S. Beardsley of Kennewick, WA. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Adrienne S. Radocy and Patricia S. Lousen. Funeral services will be held from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Friday, August 9, 2024 at 9:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Marys Church, 330 Wood Street, Bristol. Visiting hours will be Thursday, August 8, 2024 from 4:00 6:00 PM. Burial will be private.
