Mrs Maria Merces Martins

Mrs. Maria Merces 'Masie' (Andrade) Martins, age 98, of 5 Debra Avenue, Bristol, died peacefully Monday, January 9, 2012 at her home. She was the wife of the late John M. Martins, who preceded her in death in 1974. Born in the Villa Franca, St. Michaels, the Azores and a resident of Bristol for most of her life, coming here as a young child of nine months old, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Maria (Borges) Andrade. A seamstress, she worked at the former M & R Sportswear Co. and at Benjamin Church Manor, both in Bristol, retiring in 1980. Following her retirement she was a volunteer for a number of years at the Benjamin Church Senior Citizens Center and area nursing homes. She was a communicant of St. Elizabeth's Church, Bristol and a member of it's Holy Rosary Sodality. She is survived by her daughter, Lorraine M. Sousa, a sister, Agnes 'Aggie' Carraturo, both of Bristol, six grandchildren, Elizabeth Sousa-Tramonti and her husband Robert of Cumberland, Stephen S. Sousa and his wife Christine of North Providence, Michael J. Sousa and his wife Barbara of Bristol, Christopher A. Sousa and his wife Kristine of Apex, NC, Bernadette M. Sousa and her fiance Aaron Erlandson of Sherborn, MA and Matthew J. Sousa of Middletown, CT., and seven great grandchildren, Joshua, Gabriella, Ava, Katherine, Connor, Zachary and Kaden. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Sadie DeLucca Silvia and two brothers, Joseph and John Andrade. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Friday, January 13, 2012 at 10:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM in St. Elizabeth's Church, 577 Wood Street, Bristol.
