Mrs Gilda C. Sousa

Mrs. Gilda C. (Mello) Sousa, age 92 of 9 Old Ferry Road, Bristol, died Wednesday, April 20, 2011 in Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of the late John B. Sousa. Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, she was a daughter of the late John C. and Maria Theresa (Sousa) Mello. Gilda was a graduate of Colt Memorial High School, Class of 1937. She was a secretary for the Columban Fathers in Bristol for a number of years and she and her late husband owned and operated Mt. Hope Liquors on Hope St., Bristol for a number of years retiring in the late 1960's. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, Bristol. She is survived by a son, JohnJ. 'Jack'Sousa and his wife Elaine M. of Riverside, a sister, Eva Amaral of New Port Richey, FL and three grandchildren, John J. Sousa, Jr. of Riverside, Gina Marie McGarrigle of Taunton, MA and Kristie Ann Lavornia of Pawtucket and five great grandchildren. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, John C. Mello, Jr., and four sisters, Edwveis Tavares, Mary Paiva, Valentina Garcia and Theresa C. Carlos. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Monday, April 25, 2011 at 9:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Mary's Church, 330 Wood Street, Bristol. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visitation will be Monday morning only at 8:30 AM.
