William Merritt Field, 68, of Bristol, Rhode Island passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, March 5, 2015 while vacationing in Florida. William was born in Kassel, Germany to the late Col. Frederick P. Field Sr. and Ruth Harriot Field. He was the brother of Frederick P. Field Jr. (wife Cheryl Jean), of Fresno, Ca. and the late Rosalind Field Peters-Doyle of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. William is survived by his wife Audrey Brito Field and his sons,Michael Field, (wife Rebecca), and SFC. Kevin Field (wife Katie) and grandchildrenAutumn and Jacob Field. William was the brother-in-law of Joseph M. Brito Jr. (wife Elizabeth), Mary Brito Fitzgerald, Michael Brito Sr., (wife Sally) and the late C. Patrick Brito (wife Mary). He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. William was a graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy and Providence College. He served in the United States Army in Vietnam, as a Green Beret, achieving the rank of Major before retiring. He also served in the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve. He worked for C. Brito Construction, Inc. while pursuing his commercial pilot license. He flew freight for several airlines and finished the last 15 years of his career as a pilot for Cape Air, flying passengers on routes from Providence to the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. William was an avid motorcycle rider and participated in many charitable endeavors. He also enjoyed a long relationship with the Special Forces community, serving on the board of the Rhode Island chapter of the Special Forces Association. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at The Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, RI Funeral services will be held at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 399 Hope St. in Bristol at 10 am on Friday, March 13, 2015. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Chestnut St., Bristol RI In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bristol Animal Shelter, 10 Minturn Road, Bristol, RI 02809.
