Mr. Robert E. Flanagan, age 74, of Bristol, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 6, 2010. He was the beloved husband of Mary Louise (OGara) Flanagan, his wife of 54 years. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late William A. and Helen G. (Smith) Flanagan. A lifelong Bristol resident, he graduated from Colt Memorial High School Class of 1953. He was a member of the Kingsmen and Rangers Drum and Bugle Corps in his youth. He was a Korean War Veteran, serving in the US Navy aboard the Destroyer Benner and Johnston as a Radioman. Mr. Flanagan was a truck mechanic, retiring from Federal Express after 19 years of service. He enjoyed feeding and watching birds, boating and fishing. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Robert E. Flanagan, Jr. and his wife, Donna of Bristol, a daughter, Donna Flanagan-Jacobson of West Greenwich and five grandchildren, Ashley and Katelyn Jacobson, Jason Flanagan, Zachary and Joshua Jacobson. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 9:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State Street, Bristol. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Marys Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visiting hours will be Tuesday, from 4:00-7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 931 Jefferson Blvd., Suite 3004, Warwick, RI 02886.
