Mr. Joseph A. 'Sparky' 'Mr. Mercury' Carvalho, Jr., age 80 of 1045 Hope Street, Bristol, died Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of the late Patricia A. (McWilliams) Carvalho, who preceded him in death in 1996. Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, he was a son of the late Joseph A. and Delia (Aguiar) Carvalho. A graduate of Colt Memorial High School, Class of 1953, where he played on the football, Basketball and baseball teams. He served in the US Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He worked in the shipping/receiving department of Furon Dixon Corp in Bristol for 26 years, retiring in 1990. He was a 59 year member of the Ever Ready Engine & Hose Co., No. 1 of the Bristol Fire Department and was also a member of the Cup Defenders Association both in Bristol. An avid sports fan, he was devoted to his Cleveland Brown Football and the New York Yankees Baseball. During his younger years he helped coach Little League Baseball and Pee Wee Football. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends especially watching movies and sports games. He is survived by four children, Joseph Carvalho, III of Somerset, MA, Daniel Carvalho of Fall River, MA, Karen Carvalho and Michael Carvalho (Jennifer), all of Bristol, five grandchildren, Matthew Carvalho (Nicole Valenzuela), Kelly Ann, Nicholas, Michaela and Joshua Carvalho, his great granddaughter, Ava Presley Valenzuela and two step-grandsons, Thomas M. Saucier and Timothy F. Cabral. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Natalie Dias. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 10:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM in St. Elizabeth's Church, 577 Wood Street, Bristol. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visiting hours will be Friday, November 14 from 4:00-8:00 PM.
