Mr. John P. Serpa, age 91, of 24 Duffield Road, Bristol, died peacefully Monday, February 21, 2011 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Lillian (Almeida) Serpa, his wife of 59 years. Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, he was a son of the late Joseph P. and Marianna (Perry) Serpa. He worked for 18 years in the Quality Control Department of Raytheon Corp. in Portmouth, retiring in 1981. He had previously worked for Pawtucket Ready Mix Co., Pearson Yacht and Brito Construction. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth's Church, Bristol and loved working on cars and auto racing. He is survived in addition to his wife by a son, Steven Serpa of Warren, three daughters, Beverly Sweeney of Fruitland Park, FL, Kathy Thwaite of Somerset, MA and Patty Jo Serpa of Riverside, twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John Paul Serpa, a daughter, Karen J. Serpa, a grandson, Joey Serpa, four brothers, Manuel P., Joseph P., William P, and James P.Serpa and two sisters, Mary Lucianno and Rose Borges. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial, Friday, February 25, 2011 at 9:00 AM in St. Elizabeth's Church, 577 Wood Street, Bristol. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Home and Hospice Care of RI, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904.
