Mr. John 'Jack' Alvin Rutledge June 3, 1943 - April 29, 2012 On April 29, 2012, John (Jack) Alvin Rutledge, 68, of Bristol, quietly passed away from family and friends after a valiant battle with lung cancer while at Rhode Island Hospital. He was born in New Haven, CT on June 3, 1943 son of the late Drew Alvin and Helen Loretta Rutledge of New Haven, Connecticut. Jack graduated East Haven High School in 1961, was inducted in 1963 into the USAF and stationed at RAF Chicksands, England. His field of operation was signal interception, and was honorably discharged in 1967. Upon completing his service, he returned to CT and worked as a reporter at the New Haven Register, 1967-1971. During this time, he attended and graduated Southern Connecticut State University with a B.A. in English/History. Jack then relocated to Newton, MA where he continued his education receiving a M.FA from Boston University. He was a popular art/film/ceramic teacher at Wellesley Senior High, retiring in 2002 after 30 years of service. He also was a reporter for The Boston Globe. Already an avid world traveler, in retirement, Jack enjoyed longer periods of time hiking, biking and photographing in: Asia, Europe, India, and Central and South Americas. Thailand became a second home, especially during winters. He was a survivor of the Tsunami of 2004, the wave rolled past while he was out scuba diving. A devout Red Sox and Patriots fan, AMC member and motorcyclist, he will be remembered for his wit, humor, passion for life, the arts and travel, and for bone-crushing bear hugs. Jack leaves behind two sons from a former marriage, Thomas Drew Rutledge of San Diego, CA and Austin Rutledge, Leeds, MA. His companion, Andrea Romelsteinev, of Austria. Grandchildren: Drew, Madelyn and Patrick Rutledge, of San Diego, CA. Sisters: Elizabeth Ardito of East Haven, CT and Margaret Curello of Florence, MA, and brothers-in-law, John Ardito and Edward Curello. Also several nieces and nephews. At his request, no service is planned. He will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Restless Leg Syndrome Foundation 1610 14th St., Rochester, MN 55901. Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial celebration of Jacks life on Sunday, June 3, 2012 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM in Jack's Condo.
