Mr. John R. Partington

Mr. John R. Partington, age 89, of Bristol, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, February 17th. He was the husband of the late Muriel B. 'Trudy' (Trudell) Partington, his wife of 62 years who passed away this past November. Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, he was a son of the late Joseph H. and Bertha E. (Crowley) Partington. John was a graduate of Colt Memorial High School Class of 1939 and he graduated from Providence College in 1942 with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in Mathematics Education and from Rhode Island College with a Masters of Secondary Education. He served in the US Army as a First Lieutenant with the 410th Bombardment Group in the European-African Theatre during WWII and retired from the RI Army National Guard in 1972 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was a Mathematics Teacher and Chairman of the Mathematics Dept. at Bristol High School for 26 years, retiring in 1986. He was the Tennis Coach at Bristol High for many years and was inducted into the RI Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame and was inducted a number of years ago into the Bristol Athletic Hall of Fame. He previously worked in the Accounting Dept. of Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp in Bristol for a number of years. John was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, a life member of the Bristol Council #379, Knights of Columbus and 4th Degree, St. Pius X Assembly. He was a long time member of the Bristol 4th of July Committee where he was the oldest active member of the committee and the General Chairman in 1970-1971, he was the recipient of the Hattie Brown Service award 1997 and he was honored in 1998 as being named the Chief Marshal of the 4th of July Parade. He was a former member and Past Chairman of the Bristol School Committee, he was a former Recreation Director for the Town of Bristol and a tennis instructor for many years. He was a member of the Kearney Post # 6, American Legion in Bristol and their treasurer for a number of years. He was a life member of the Dreadnaught Hook Ladder and Hose Co., No. 1, of the Bristol Fire Department and a member of the Bristol County Lodge of Elks. He is survived by three children, Judy Squires and her husband, Don of Bristol, Bob Partington and his wife Chris of Rumford and John R. Partington, Jr. of Huntington Beach, CA, four grandchildren, Heidi Squires Vermilyea and her husband David, Stacey Partington, Whitney Squires and Brian Partington and a sister, Margaret F. Riley of Bristol. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Regina M. Hale and Clare E. Wells. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Monday, February 21, 2011 at 9:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Mary's Church, 330 Wood Street, Bristol. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visiting hours Sunday, February 20, from 2:00-6:00 PM.
