Daniel Gibson Knowlton, of Bristol, passed away on June 11, 2015 after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Daniel W. and Josephine (Gibson) Knowlton, of Bristol, and brother of the late Josephine (Dadie) Jordan of Tucson, AZ. He is survived by his wife, Lavina (Fales) Knowlton, of Bristol, a son, Daniel C. Knowlton, of East Greenwich, a daughter, Jean K. (Steve) Hickel, three grandchildren, Bonnie (Barry)VanVolkinburg, Melodie (Ben) Keizer, Andrew Hickel, and a great-granddaughter, Lulu VanVolkinburg, all of the Grand Rapids, MI area. Mr. Knowlton was born in 1922 in Washington, DC, spending his summers as a child, at Longfield, in Bristol, with his family. He loved boating, building projects, and working outdoors. He developed his expertise as a Hand-Bookbinder, studying with the Marion Lane School of Bookbinding, graduating in 1949. He became the University Bookbinder and Conservator of Library Materials at Brown University from 1956 to 1992. He operated his home bindery, Longfield Studio, for 65 years, and just retired in December, 2014. He taught bookbinding at his home studio until 2008, and also at the Providence Handicraft Club in the 1960s. With a patient nature and optimistic outlook, Dan loved his family, grandkids, many true friends, and teaching others, and especially working on projects for the Childrens Grove in Bristol Highlands. He was a member at St. Michaels Church and also active with the Guild of Bookworkers for over 50 years. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at 10:00 AM in St. Michaels Episcopal Church, 399 Hope Street, Bristol. Burial will follow in Juniper Hill Cemetery, Sherry Avenue, Bristol. At his request, there will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bristol Rescue Squad, P.O.
