Mr Carroll J. Delaney

July 9, 1947 — September 26, 2016

Carroll James Delaney, Jr. ,69, of Bristol, RI died too soon on September 26, 2016 at Newport Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Pamela (DeLeo) Delaney and loving father of Carroll J. Delaney III. Born in New York City and raised in Bronxville, NY, he was the son of Carroll J. and Mary (Reilly) Delaney. He graduated from Portsmouth Abbey in 1965 where he won the Pell Medal for American History and the heart of Pamela, his wife of 46 years. He received his BA from Boston College in 1969. He attended New York University Business School before joining the New York Army National Guard as a supply sergeant. He made his home in New York City and spent weekends and vacations at his home in Bristol RI, where he retired in 2010. His early plans to teach history were replaced by a fascination with US government bonds after interning with former Treasury Secretary Bill Simon, on the US Government Bond Desk at Salomon Brothers. He joined Carroll, McEntee and McGinley, a boutique firm specializing in government markets and rose to become its President and CEO. He was widely regarded as an expert on interest rates. He authored a commentary on the markets and was frequently quoted in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Tell him about a coup in an obscure country, and he would tell you the impact on interest rates. Carroll was a strong personality and a magnificent mind and intellect, bursting with curiosity and enthusiasm for the people and things that formed his passions. When he was “on,” he powered the party and urged the rest of us never to be boring! He filled our lives with music, song, laughter and fun. He played his guitar and sang the blues into the wee hours of the morning. He lugged his telescope to Barbados to see Haleys Comet only to find the comet obscured by sand from a storm in Africa. He orchestrated magnificent 4th of July fireworks timed to the 1812 Overture to the delight of many and to the annoyance of a few, including the Bristol PD. One of his proudest achievements was dining in 4 Michelin 3-star restaurants in forty-eight hours. He was a connoisseur of fine wine, a Francophile, political junkie, an avid reader, a sports fan (NY teams , Boston Celtics and BC Eagles) and a student of American history. Dinners on his deck overlooking the bay with his guitar at the ready, his telescope sited on some heavenly wonder, music blasting and himself, surrounded with friends and family, were sometimes passionate, sometimes zany, and always a great time.He enjoyed every moment of his life.. a life lived on his own terms. In addition to his wife and son, he is survived by sisters Mary Jane Delaney of Ridgefield, CT, and Marianne Delaney of Bedford, NY and brothers Thomas F. Delaney (Linda Baker) of Mamaroneck, NY and John R. Delaney (Eileen Lamberti) of Bronxville, NY, and several adoring nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 10:00 AM in the Church of St. Gregory the Great, Portsmouth Abbey, 285 Corys Lane, Portsmouth. Burial will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, NY on October 24. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
