Mr. Bernard Valante, age 89 of Franklin Court, 180 Franklin Street and formerly of Benjamin Church Manor and DeWolf Avenue, Bristol, died Monday, January 24, 2011 at St. Elizabeth's Manor, Bristol surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Maria Eugenia 'Jenny' (Horta)Valante. Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, he was a son of the late Anthony and Rose (Tortorice) Valante. Bernard served as a technician fifth grade in the US Army during WWII in the European theater. He was a production worker for Thurston Sail Company, Bristol for 25 years, retiring in 1984. He previously worked for the former Staples Coal Co. in Bristol. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth's Church. He is survived by a daughter Mary L. Caton and her husband Charlie of Warren, son-in-law, James Caton of Warren, five grandchildren, Lori Stone, Lisa Caton, James Caton, Kevin Caton and Kelly Brand, eleven great grandchildren, David, Jason, Justin, Allan, Dominic and Joshua Stone and Joshua, Shea and Julia Caton, Carly and Joseph Brand, six sisters, Florence Rose of Buzzard Bay, MA, Mary Zorro of Maine, Dorothy Jarvis of Clearwater, Florida, Viola Vinacco of Cranston, Shirley Harris of Florida and Julia Valante of Tiverton and two brothers, Anthony Valante Jr. of Orlando, FL and John Valante of North Attleboro, MA. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Julia L. Caton, a brother, Manuel Valante, and five sisters, Emily Valante, Johanna Silva, Isabel McKenzie, Lillian Kenna and Ruth Boorom. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 10:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM in St. Elizabeth's Church, 577 Wood Street, Bristol. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visiting hours, Friday, January 28 from 4:00-7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bristol Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 775, Bristol, RI 02809.
