Anthony A. Nunes, 83, 2 Seal Island Road, Bristol RI died on January 24, 2012 at home surrounded by his loving family and beloved wife of 59 years, M. Adelaide (dOliveira) Nunes. Born in Bristol, RI on October 4, 1928, the son of the late Salvador and Maria A. Nunes of Bristol, he was the brother of Patrocinia (Nunes) Pires and the late Fernanda (Nunes) Correia. A lifelong resident of Bristol, he graduated from Colt Memorial High School in 1948 and from the YMCA Institute with an Associates Degree in Architectural Engineering. After serving in the U.S. Army Reserves and the U.S. Navy Seabees, he returned to Bristol and established Anthony A. Nunes Inc., where he enjoyed his career in construction and real estate development for 58 years. As Chairman of the Bristol YMCA Board of Directors, he was instrumental in saving the organization from financial ruin in the 1970s. Anthony was named “Citizen of the Year” by the East Bay Chamber of Commerce in 1985 for his contribution in bringing industry to the County. He was on the Bristol Planning Board, was a member of the Bristol County Builders Association, Bristol Rotary Club, and RI Builders Association. He served on the Board of Directors of Fleet National Bank and was a charter member of the Roger Williams Century Club. During his lifetime, he was a member of the Bristol Elks, the Anawan Club, Crestwood Country Club, Bristol Yacht Club, and was a Third Degree Mason at the St. Albans Lodge. One of his fondest memories was serving his town as Chief Marshal of the 1972 Bristol 4th of July Parade. He loved his pets, was an avid golfer, gardener and yachtsman. He belonged to the First Congregational Church of Bristol. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children: Dawn McKown and her husband Richard of Fort Wayne, IN; Leila Fay and her husband Robert of Bristol; Alan Nunes and his wife Lee Ann of Bristol; and Jane Dever of Rehoboth, MA. Anthony loved his seven grandchildren, Philip Berretto, Jessica (Berretto) Donaldson, Elena (Berretto) Botelho, Peter J. Dever, Jr., Adelaide M. Dever, Andrew A. Nunes, Alex J. Nunes and his five great grandchildren. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Monday, January 30, 2012 at 9:00 AM with a funeral service in celebration of his life at 10:00 AM in the First Congregational Church, 298 High Street, Bristol. Burial with Military Honors will follow in North Burial Ground, Hope Street, Bristol. Visiting hours, Sunday, January 29 from 2:00-6:00 PM.
