Mr Alan D. Storms

September 3, 1936 — November 8, 2011

Mr. Alan D. Storms, age 75 of Bristol, RI and formerly of East Aurora, NY and Pittsburgh, PA, died Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at Roger Williams Medical Center, Providence, following a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Gail S. (Schaller) Storms, his wife of 53 years, adored father of Susan S. Rice and her husband, Mark of Naperville, IL and Pamela S. Hufnagel and her husband James of Basking Ridge, NJ and cherished grandfather to Matthew Rice and his wife Sheri and Scott Rice of Illinois. He is also survived by a sister, Kathy Hamilton and her husband Lee of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. Mr. Storms was born on September 3, 1936 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin the son of the late Donald and Florence (Seekamp) Storms. A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in mechanical engineering, he also earned an MBA from Canisius College. He served as an ordinance officer in the US Army from 1958 to 1961. Mr. Storms had a long and fulfilling career as an engineer with Martin Aircraft, Moog Servocontrols and Westinghouse Electric. In recent years, he headed his own consulting firm, Storms Advisory Services. As a boy, Mr. Storms was infused with a life-long love of all things nautical, as he witnessed the launching of WWII submarines at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company. He was an avid boater, having sailed extensively not only in the U.S. but also in Europe and the Caribbean. He served as an instructor in sailing and navigation for the US Power Squadron. Mr. Storms was an active member of the Bristol Yacht Club where he served on several committees and as a volunteer for over a dozen years at the Herreshoff Marine Museum. Music was a strong passion throughout his life. Wherever he lived, he joyfully participated in choirs and a capella groups including the MIT Logarhythms. Locally, he was a member of the Bristol County Chorus and sang with the choir at St. Michael's Church where he also served on the finance and organ committees. Mr. Storms' many professional memberships included the National Fire Protection Association and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers where he served on the Switchgear Committee for many years. He was also a member of MIT's Cardinal and Gray Society. Throughout his life, his interests were diverse and he generously volunteered in many organizations, acting as both a leader and mentor, passing on his special skills to hundreds of people. Mr. Storms was outspoken on environmental issues, zeroing in on public figures who he felt made sweeping allegations against the electric generating plant in Somerset. He felt that the plant was responsibly run and was not a threat to the environment.
