Madeline Grimo

Mrs. Madeline (Botelho) Grimo, age 90 of Bristol, died unexpectedly on Monday, June 2, 2025 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Peter A. Grimo, who preceded her in death in January 1984.


Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, she was the youngest of eleven children and the last surviving child of Louis and Maria C. (Benevides daSilva) Botelho. Madeline attended the former St. Mary’s School and was a graduate of Colt Memorial High School, Class of 1952. Following her graduation she attended business school in Providence. Madeline was an administrative assistant at the former Reynolds School and for the summer school program at Bristol High School. She was also an interpreter for the Bristol School Department and the Bristol-Warren Regional School District in their ESL Programs. She retired from the Bristol-Warren Regional School District in 1996 after 30 years of service. Following her retirement, she served as the administrative assistant at the Sansone Funeral Home for a number of years.


Madeline was an active and faithful communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Bristol and received the highest honor of the parish in 1993 when she was chosen to be the Chief Marshal of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. She was a member and secretary of the Feast Committee, a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society and the Rosary-Altar Society, a Lector, and a Eucharistic Minister. She was one of the originators of the annual Bereavement Mass that takes place every November, served on the Saturday morning cleaning crew, was a long-time member of the church Choir, and was a volunteer at the church office.


Madeline received all her sacraments at St. Elizabeth’s Church and was a communicant there for many years. She was a volunteer and chairman of the Mount St. Joseph Bazaar for the Sisters of St. Dorothy in Bristol for many years. The highlight of Madeline’s life was a personal audience with Pope Saint John Paul, II, arranged by the Sisters of St. Dorothy in appreciation for all that she and her late husband did for them. She was a volunteer at St. Elizabeth’s Manor Nursing Home and Silver Creek Manor Nursing Home serving as a Eucharistic Minister to the sick and helping with monthly Masses. Madeline was very active in her beloved community as a lifetime member of the Bristol 4th of July Committee, a past member of the Bristol Rotary Club, and a 40-year member of the former Hope Circle, Daughters of Isabella. She also helped organize the Concerts on the Common for several years, and was a volunteer with Bristol YMCA’s Camp Hess during the 1960s.


In 1996, Madeline was named an Honorary Rotarian. In 2001, she was the recipient of the Bristol Fourth of July Committee’s Hattie Brown Award and in 2009, she was the recipient of the Bristol Christmas Festival Committee’s Spirit of Christmas Award..


Madeline was the sister of the late John Botelho, Feliciano Botelho, Joseph Botelho, Gildo Botelho, Rose Raposa, Mary Ferreira, and Otilia Teixeira.

She is survived by three children - Dr. Steven Grimo, (Laura) of Canton, Ohio, Gerald Grimo (Agnes) of Windsor, VT and Patricia Squatrito (Nat), of Bristol with whom she made her home; ten grandchildren - Michael Grimo (Brooke), Jonathan Grimo (Christine), Jennifer Brill (Steven), Matthew Grimo, Andrew Squatrito, Audrey Gault (William), Zachary Tetu, Andrew Kennedy, Patrick Kennedy, and Kevin Kennedy; eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.


Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, June 13, 2025 at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State Street, Bristol. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visitation will be held in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, on Thursday, June 12, 2025 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State Street, Bristol, RI 02809.
