Manuel A. Sousa

Mr. Manuel A. Sousa, age 90, of Silver Creek Manor, 7 Creek Lane, Bristol, formerly of Pompano Beach, FL and Waltham, MA, died Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at the Silver Creek Manor. He was the husband of the late Rose (Tufarolo) Sousa. Born in Bristol, RI, he was the son of the late Manuel A. and Rose (Arruda) Sousa. A resident of Bristol for much of his life, he retired to Waltham, MA and Pompano Beach, FL, where he lived for 16 years. He then moved to France at age 86 where he lived with his daughter and her family for 3 years before returning full circle back to Bristol in 2006. Mr. Sousa was a graduate of Colt Memorial High School, Class of 1935. He served as a Master Sergeant in the US Army, Coast Artillery during WWII. He was a Vice President of Administration for the former Bristol Manufacturing Company, formerly in Bristol and then worked in Credit and Customer Relations for Converse, Inc. in North Reading, MA, retiring in 1986. Mr. Sousa had a long history of community service in Bristol, and remained a true Bristolian throughout his life. He was a former member of the Bristol Rotary Club, the Bristol Council # 379, Knights of Columbus and a communicant of St. Elizabeths Church, Bristol and St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Pompano Beach, FL. He was a member of the Bristol 4th of July Committee in the 1960s, serving as their chairman in 1962 and 1963. In 1966 he was honored by the former Bristol YMCA as their Outstanding Citizen of the Year. He was the vice chairman of the Bristol Charter Commission in the late 1960s, and had served on both the Bristol Zoning and Planning Boards of Review, the Bristol Budget Committee, serving as both Chairman and Vice Chairman. He is survived by his daughter, Rosemary Yeh, her husband, and three granddaughters, Celine, Lauren and Chloe Yeh, all of Paris, France, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Amelia Sousa, Margaret Gaglio, Alice Sousa and Albertina Raposa. “Manny” will be remembered by all for his kind and gentle nature, and his tolerance and enthusiasm for life. He was a true gentleman. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Monday, February 4, 2008 at 9:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Elizabeths Church, 577 Wood Street, Bristol. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Marys Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visiting hours, Sunday, February 3, 2:00-5:00 PM. Kindly Omit Flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donors choice.
