Kathleen A. (Gauthier) Kalen, a passionate educator who touched countless lives in Bristol RI, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, May 2, 2025, at the age of 90, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Barrington, RI, on August 31, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Catherine (Walsh) Gauthier. Bristol held a special significance for Kathleen, a town she lovingly referred to as 'a Norman Rockwell town' and where she built a life rich in connection and community.
A proud graduate of Barrington High School in 1952, Kathleen was encouraged to pursue higher education by her guidance counselor, earning her bachelor's degree in education from Rhode Island College. It was there she formed lasting bonds with her dearest friends, Ann Morrill and Louise Melucci. Kathleen embraced motherhood with love and devotion, raising three sons: Joseph K. Kalen, the late Francis (who passed in infancy), and her youngest son, Mark, who recently returned to Bristol. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren, Nicholas R., Ryan B., and Celia R. Kalen. In her final days, Kathleen's wish to remain in her beloved home was honored through the care and support of her extended family and friends.
For over 20 years, Kathleen's dedication shone brightly as a 5th-grade teacher at Colt Andrews Elementary School. Her impact resonated deeply within the school community, leaving a lasting impression on generations of students, fellow teachers, and administrators. A strong advocate for her colleagues as a proud union leader and member of the National Education Association, Kathleen was a passionate supporter and mentor to aspiring educators. Even after retiring from teaching, her enthusiasm for learning and sharing knowledge continued as a tour guide at the historic Belcourt Mansion in Newport, where she enjoyed engaging with college students during the summer months. A devout Catholic and active communicant of St. Marys Church in Bristol, Kathleen also shared her voice and faith from the lectern.
Beyond her professional life, Kathleen was a true foodie who delighted in exploring new culinary experiences and the beauty of the ocean. She especially cherished treating her sons and grandchildren to meals out, always with the heartwarming invitation: 'Where would you like to go? Its on me, order anything you want!' Above all, family was paramount to Kathleen, and she treasured every moment spent with her grandchildren.
Kathleen is lovingly remembered by her sons, Joseph and his girlfriend of seventeen years, Tanya Kieron, and Mark; her grandchildren, Nicholas (25), Ryan (21), and Celia (17); and her many relatives, friends, and former students.
She was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Catherine Gauthier; and her sisters, Patricia Michigan and Maureen Smith.
