Command Sgt. Major Joseph A. Arouca, US Army Retired, age 91, of Ormond Beach, Florida and formerly of Monterey Drive, Bristol, died Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at the Avante Nursing Home in Ormond Beach, FL. He was the husband of the late Jennie I. (Bruno) Arouca. Born in Bristol and a resident for most of his life, he was a son of the late Joseph V. and Anna (Gonsalves) Arouca. He was a resident of Ormond Beach for the past 10 years. He was a field auditor for the Department of the Army for 27 years, retiring in 1973 as a Command Sergeant Major. He had started his military career serving in WWII. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, a member of the American Legion Post #6, and the Leonardo DaVinci Lodge, Sons of Italy, all in Bristol and also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He is survived by a daughter, Jennifer A. Fitzpatrick and her husband, Jim of Ormond Beach, FL and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Arouca and a sister, Catherine Cabral. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial, Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State Street, Bristol. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Marys Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of the Bristol Animal Shelter, C/O 11 Broadcommon Road, Box 155, Bristol, RI 02809. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Sansone Funeral Home, Bristol.
