Jon Eaton Simpson
1932-2026
Jon Eaton Simpson passed away on April 13, 2026 at age 93 in Bristol,
Rhode Island. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of
George Eaton Simpson and Eleanor Brown Simpson. He lived in Amherst,
Massachusetts for many years. He was a veteran of the United States Air
Force.
He was a Sociology Professor at the University of Massachusetts,
Amherst. He approached life with discipline, consistency, and a preference
for understatement and believed in doing what needed to be done without
much discussion about it.
He was not outwardly demonstrative, but he remained constant-most
notably in his 69-year marriage to his beloved wife, Mary Lou (Gutierrez)
Simpson and in relationship to his children, Jon Mark (Cornelia), Laurie
(Jim) Mulligan, and Barbara (Matt) Securo, who remain closely connected.
He is survived by his wife, children, three grandchildren, Philip (Jessica)
Simpson, Katherine (Armand) Steyn, Nicholas Nardacci, and two great-
grandchildren, Leo and Ivy Steyn. He also leaves behind his sister, Nancy
Alonzo, and brother, Curtis Simpson and many nieces and nephews. His
sister Louise Hendry predeceased him.
No formal services are planned in keeping with his wishes and preference for simplicity.
