John L. Monaghan, Sr.

Mr. John L. Monaghan, Sr., age 85, of 54 Sowams Drive, Bristol, died Saturday at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of Shirley A. (Campbell) Monaghan, his wife of 52 years. Born in Central Falls, RI, he was a son of the late Robert and Laura (Labossiere) Monaghan. A resident of Bristol for 41 years, he previously resided in Rumford. Mr. Monaghan was a graduate of St. Raphael Academy, Pawtucket, Class of 1939 and served as a chef in the US Navy during WWII. He was an expeditor for the former B.I.F. Industries, East Greenwich for 31 years retiring in 1983. He was a communicant of St. Marys Church, Bristol, a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and he loved cooking, gardening and puttering around his home and yard. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, John L. Monaghan, Jr. and William B. Monaghan, both of Riverside, a daughter, Diane M. Englert of Warwick, six grandchildren, Bryan, Kristine, Siobhan, Liam, Michael and Jared, two sisters, Margaret Carlone of San Bernardino, CA and Lora Larsen of Cranston, and a brother, James Monaghan of Charlestown. He was preceded in death in addition to his parents by three brothers, Thomas, Robert and George Monaghan. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Thursday, Nov. 9, at 9:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Marys Church, 330 Wood Street, Bristol. Burial will follow in St. Marys Cemetery, Chestnut St., Bristol. Visiting hours, Wednesday, 4:00-8:00 PM.
