James Thomas Quigley, 91, of Bristol, RI, passed peacefully at his residence surrounded by his loving family on July 30, 2026. He was the husband of Genevieve Louise (Picchione) Quigley, with whom he celebrated 70 years of marriage on July 28th.
Born in Bronxville, NY on June 10, 1935, he was the son of the late James P. Quigley and the late Marjorie (Noonan) Quigley.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Mr. Quigley entered the service July 18, 1955, and served aboard the U.S.S. Charles H. Roan until June 9, 1962. He was part of the commissioning crew of the USS Forestal and continued to serve in the Navy until his retirement as a Senior Chief on March 31, 1971. His last duty station was aboard the USS Intrepid in Quonset Point.
During his service, Mr. Quigley was the recipient of the Navy Expedition medal, the National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal with "Asia" clasp, United Nations Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expedition Medal.
In 1971, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Rhode Island. Mr. Quigley was employed as an administrator in the healthcare industry having worked for the Bristol Medical Center prior to his retirement.
He enjoyed bowling, golf, sailing in years past, was a devoted New York Yankees fan and was a self-described "tortured" New York Giants fan.
Mr. Quigley was a communicant of St. Mary of the Bay Roman Catholic Church, Warren, RI.
He was a member and was a past president of the Bristol Rotary Club, was a former member of the Bristol Yacht Club, member and past president of the Bristol County YMCA and in 1984 was appointed by the Bristol Town Council to the newly formed Bristol County Water Authority Board.
In addition to his wife, he leaves his children: Mark R. Quigley and his wife, Anne (Dollins) Quigley, of Bristol, RI and Karen A. MacGovern of Bristol, RI; his grandchildren: Patrick MacGovern and his wife, Brianna, of Warren, RI, Kyle MacGovern of Warren, RI and Scott MacGovern and his wife, Maggie, of Milford, MA; his great grandchildren: Alistair, Dorian and Owen MacGovern; his brother: Michael Quigley in Florida and several extended family members and friends.
He was the brother of the late Charles Quigley.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, RI.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 10:00 am at St. Mary of the Bay Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Warren, RI.
There will be no funeral cortege from the funeral home prior to the commencement of the Funeral Mass.
Burial with military honors will follow in North Burial Ground, Bristol, RI.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be made to Tunnels for Towers Foundation.
