Dr. Frank G. DeLuca, M.D., age 84 of Barrington, died Sunday, September 11, 2011 at the Village House, Newport, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Joyce C. (Wireback) DeLuca, his wife of 52 years. Born and raised in Bristol, he was a son of the late Tindaro 'Thomas' and Calogera 'Katie' (Munafo) DeLuca. He was a longtime resident of Barrington. He attended Bristol Public Schools and served in the US Coast Guard. He received diploma's from Brown University and the University of Bologna Medical School. He was an alumni of Tufts University Surgical residency and the pediatric surgical program at New England Medical Center. Returning to his native Rhode Island he served his community for 36 years as Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Rhode Island Hospital's Potter Building and Hasbro Children's Hospital. He was a Professor Emeritus at Brown medical School. He served as President of the Providence Medical Society, member of the AMA, APSA, ASA, BAPS, N.E. Surgical Society and honorary member of the Italian Society of Pediatric Surgery. Dr. DeLuca was instrumental in the establishment of the Pediatric Trauma Unit and Intentive Care Units, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Brown University's Pediatric Surgical Fellowship Program at Hasbro Children's Hospital. He will always be remembered for his overall contribution of improving the surgical and intensive care of Rhode Island's infants and children. He was awarded a Private Audience with His Holiness Pope John Paul II due to his well known commitment and work in neonatal surgical care. He is survived in addition to his wife by five children, Dr. Bethanne DeLuca Verley, Francine DeLuca Soldi, Michele DeLuca Verley, Denise DeLuca Madden and Thomas DeLuca, a brother Dr. Carl F. DeLuca, a sister, Lucy Sanacore and 10 grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose Terranova Romano and Elizabeth Franciosi and four brothers, Dr. Joseph DeLuca, Ralph DeLuca, Esq., Jerry E. and Anthony DeLuca. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial, Thursday, September 15, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the Carmelite Monastery, 25 Watson Avenue, Barrington.
