Chief Boatswains Mate Harley E. “Irish” Townsend, US Navy Ret., age 86 of 56 Walley Street, Bristol died Monday, February 15, 2010 at the Rhode Island Hospital, Providence surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Martha E. (Principe) Townsend. Born and raised in Cambridge, Maryland, he was a son of the late Thomas E. and Leila (Brown) Townsend. He served in the US Navy as a Chief Boatswains Mate for 25 years including service in the Pacific Theater during WWII, Korean and Vietnam Wars, retiring in 1970. Following his retirement from the Navy, he worked as a maintenance supervisor for F.M. Global in Johnston for 35 years, retiring in 2000. He loved working in his yard and gardens and was a history buff, especially military history. He is survived by two daughter, Shirley Townsend Dolan and her companion, Frank Truppi of Bristol and Georgette Dudley of Warren, two grandchildren; Marc Dudley of North Miami, FL and Nicki Dudley of Cambridge, MD, two sisters, Gertrude Passwater of Dover, Delaware and Shirley Dail of Cambridge, MD. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Robert L. Dudley, Jr. and Thomas J. Dolan, Jr., a brother, Thomas Townsend and four sisters, Glenda Balden, Ruby Lord, June Sims and Betty Lee Townsend. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Saturday, February 20 at 10:00 AM with a Prayer Service in the funeral home at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Joseph Viveiros officiating. Burial with Military Honors by the US Navy will follow in North Burial Ground, Hope Street, Bristol. Visiting hours will be Friday, Feb. 19 from 5:00-7:00 PM.
