Bridget S. Hawthorne

March 29, 1949 — June 20, 2007

Bridget S. Hawthorne (Silvia), 58 of North Providence and formerly of Bristol passed away on June 20 unexpectedly at home. Born in Providence, daughter of the late Manuel C. and Mary C. Silvia (Coccio). She earned her undergraduate degree in Secondary Education from URI and Masters Degrees in Secondary Education- Urban Studies; Middle and High School Administration from RIC. She was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority and NE League of Middle Schools. She was a communicant of St. Anthonys Church N. Providence. Ms. Hawthorne was the recipient of numerous awards for her commitment and excellence in the Education field and for her ongoing support of school reform. Bridget was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 1995 and awarded such by the Oliver Hazard Perry Middle School PTO and the Student Body, a Recipient of an Excellence in Education Award from the Public Education Fund, the City Council of Providence in recognition of receiving the Providence Blue for Education Commissions Excellence in Education, A Citizen Citation from former Mayor Vincent A. Cianci, Jr., RI House of Representatives and RI Senate. Bridget was commissioned as Honorary Deputy State Fire Marshall for the State of RI in 2000 for her contributions to the community. She served as the Editor and Consultant for English/ESL/Bilingual Anthology, Scott Foresman & Company, Chicago, IL published in 1997 in Literature and Integrated Studies. Bridget will be remembered for her 32 years of dedicated work to the City of Providence in the Providence School Department. As a teacher, Bridget worked with the Student Council at O. H. Perry Middle School from 1981 to 2003 in the successful coordination of their annual Thanksgiving Basket Food Drive to assist families in the community. She was respected by colleagues for her intelligence, generosity, tenacity and devotion for all she believed in. Her students will remember her for her dedication, effort, and commitment to their success. Her last two years of tenure she served as Principal of Springfield Middle School until her retirement in 2005. Bridget was a caring woman who was extraordinarily giving of herself. Her generosity touched many hearts. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all those who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her countless ways of giving unconditionally will never be forgotten. She leaves her two loving sisters, Maryann Sousa of Boca Raton, FL and her husband, Richard and Carol Pray of Warren. She also leaves a lifetime of memories with her nephews, Rick, Chris and Jon; niece, Melissa and niece and Godchild, Holly along with her cherished seven great nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Monday at 10am at Mt. Carmel Church, State Street, Bristol.
