Anthony Como

April 28, 1931 — July 25, 2024

Anthony "Tony,Daddy,Papa" Como, passed away on the morning of July 25,2024. He lived a full and quiet life, but by no means a boring one. He was independent to his last days and very proud to be 93 years old. He loved telling people, "Im in pretty good shape for the shape Im in!" He was married for 63 years to his beautiful wife, Janet, and missed her immensely after her passing in 2021. His life was what people dream of - a promising career as a pitcher on the Astoria Athletics cut short by a shoulder injury, the accordion player in his band, the Sylvestri Trio, driving his 1958 Mercedes named Daisy, and making a home and family. He was an intelligent, educated man, graduating from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute as an electrical engineer. He had a long and successful career, working for the Government in the Defense Department on large projects in critical roles. He loved the ocean, always owning a boat of some sort, and spent many hours with the family on Long Island Sound. Whether on his own boat, or summer trips to Montauk, he loved fishing- building his own rods and tying his own flies. He proudly wore his "Papa" baseball hat and filled the role completely- building a log cabin dollhouse, sharing his "secret" pancake recipe and making traditional Italian Easter cookies from a family recipe. Getting older did not slow him down. Instead, he poured himself into photography and computers. He was a quiet man of faith, proud that he was a founding member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York. He was a long time Knight of Columbus, a lay Franciscan and a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Bristol. He was devoted to the Blessed Mother, especially under the title of Our Lady of Medjugorje, where he went, with Janet always by his side, on a thanksgiving pilgrimage. He enjoyed learning about the lives of the saints, especially Sister Faustina. His was a life well lived, and he was well loved. My prayer is that he now Rest in Peace.
