Alfred Norman Nunes

Mr. Alfred Norman Nunes, age 88, of 44 Greylock Road, Bristol, died Wednesday, October 14, 2009 in the RI Veterans Home, Bristol. He was the husband of Shirley L. (Gablinske DeLeo) Nunes and the late Mary Louise (McCaffrey) Nunes and the late Althea Maude (Davis) Nunes. Born in Providence and a lifelong resident of Bristol, he was a son of the late Joseph M. and Carmelina “Millie” (Rollo) Nunes. Educated in Bristol School, he was a 1939 graduate of Colt Memorial High School and was a 1948 graduate of Bryant College, Providence with a degree in Accounting and Finance. He served in the US Navy as a Yeoman 3rd Class, during WWII. He was an Independent Insurance Agent and the Founder and Owner of the A. N. Nunes Agency in Bristol for 32 years, retiring in 1982. He was the former Bristol Town Treasurer and Tax Collector from 1953-1958. He served on Bristols First Charter Commission and on the High School Building Committee. Served as a Past President and a member for many years of the Independent Insurance Agents of Rhode Island and had served as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Independent Insurance Agents. He was a long time avid mountain climber and sailor. Owned sailboats for 55 years, cruising all along the New England Coast from New York to the Canadian Border. Later in life he became an avid golfer. He was a communicant and former Trustee of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, he was a 50 year member of the Bristol Council, Knights of Columbus, a former member of the Bristol Rotary and a former member of the Citizens Advisory Committee of the Bristol County Water Authority. Later in life he was a volunteer for meals on wheels and a volunteer driver for FISH and later E.C.H.O. in the Bristol area providing transportation to medical facilities for those in need. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Peter A. Nunes (Mary) of South Kingstown and Thomas J. Nunes of Westerly, three step-children, State Representative Douglas W. Gablinske (Pat) and Wayne Gablinske (Linda), all of Bristol and Linda Gablinske of Cranston, three grandchildren, Charlotte, Timothy and Christian Nunes and five step-grandchildren. In addition to his first two wives and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, The Rev. Mr. Joseph R. Nunes. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Monday, October 19, 2009 at 9:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Bristol. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Marys Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visiting hours Sunday, Oct. 18 from 2:00-6:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State Street or to Bristol Good Neighbors Soup Kitchen and Pantry, P.O. Box 414, both, Bristol, RI 02809.
