John F. Vittoria

John F. Vittoria, 89, passed away peacefully at his home in Bristol on Monday, July 25, 2022. He was the devoted husband of Arline (Chamberlain) Vittoria for 67 years before his passing. Born in Canonsburg, PA, John was the son of the late Alfonso and Angelina (Ferrara) Vittoria. John was born, raised, and educated in Pennsylvania before going off to serve in the U.S. Navy during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. John left the Navy in 1968. John took great pride in his service and often referred to himself as a tin can sailor from his days on a destroyer. During his time in service, John served aboard the USS Johnston, USS Hickox, USS Bridget, and the USS Hutch I. Cone. John was a Chief Sonar Technician and was stationed in San Diego, CA for some time as an instructor at the U.S. Navy Fleet Antisubmarine Warfare School. While on active duty, he received several letters of commendation from superior officers for excellence and devotion to duty. After leaving the Navy, John worked as a Program Manager at Raytheon for many years before retiring in 1992. John was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church where he volunteered as a Religious Educator. John also volunteered with the King Philip Little League and the local Boy Scouts. John loved all things Pittsburgh sports. In addition to his wife Arline, John also leaves behind his children: John Michael Vittoria (Anne Marie) of Bristol, Joyce Garfield (Donald) of Massachusetts, Celeste Amos (Carl) of Florida, Christopher Vittoria (Barbara) of Warren; his grandchildren: Jessica Blake (Erik), Justin Garfield (Kayla), Andrew Vittoria (Erin), Melissa Wilson (Dustin), MaryAnne Menton ( Gregory), Matthew Vittoria (Christina), Lauren Amos, Robert Vittoria, Sara Amos, Christina Vittoria, Daniel Vittoria; his great grandchildren: Henry Blake, Miles Blake, Sarah Menton, Michael Menton, Elizabeth Menton, Ayvalynne Garfield, Desmond Garfield, Alexandria Vittoria, Hadrian Vittoria, Adeline Vittoria, Cecilia Vittoria; and many extended family and friends. John was pre-deceased by his parents and his siblings Anthony and Joseph Vittoria. Calling Hours are respectfully omitted. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, August 8, 2022 at 10 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State Street, Bristol. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name can be made to either St. Judes Childrens Hospital or to the Visiting Nurse Home & Hospice, 1184 E. Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.
