Mr. Matthew J. Salcone

Mr. Matthew J. Salcone, age 94 of Roma Street, Bristol, died peacefully Friday, December 1, 2017 at Silver Creek Manor surrounded by his loving family, on what would have been his 72nd Anniversary of his marriage to the late Sue J. (Castigliego) Salcone, who preceded him in death in September of 2015. Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, he was a son of the late Peter and Victoria (Marcolongo) Salcone. He served in the US Navy Amphibious Fleet during WWII. He was wounded in action when his ship was hit by enemy fire while landing tanks on a beach during an invasion in Europe. He recovered at the Bethesda Naval Hospital, received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, and then went on to fight in the naval battles in the Pacific. Matthew was a machinist for over 35 years with the Kaiser Aluminum Corporation at both of their former Bristol and Portsmouth Plants retiring in 1973. He was also a self-employed Quahoger for many years. Deeply religious, he was an active communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Bristol, serving as a President of the former St. Vincent DePaul Society, the Nocturnal Adoration Society, Feast Volunteer for many years and in 1998 Matthew along with his late wife Sue received the highest honor of the parish, they were named Chief Marshals of the 16th of July Feast in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Matthew was also a life member of the Bristol Council Knights of Columbus, a member of the former House of Judah prayer group for many years and a volunteer for the Columban Fathers Summer Festival. He was also a member of the Leonardo Da Vinci Lodge, Sons of Italy, Anthony C. Almeida Post, V.F.W., the Bristol County Lodge of Elks and a member of the Kaiser Retirees. Matthew loved spending time with his family, reading and shell fishing. He is survived by three children; Therese M. Pasqual (Manuel), Victoria A. Cortellessa (John P. Jr.) and Peter M. Salcone, all of Bristol, six grandchildren; Susan Pasqual, John Paul Cortellessa, III, Matthew Salcone, Valerie McCue (David), Michael Salcone and Jennifer Carvalho (Filipe), four great grandchildren; Elijah Carvalho, Chloe McCue, Sienna Carvalho and Cameron McCue and a sister, Suzanne Falcoa (Ray) of Bristol. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by brothers; Anthony and Paul Salcone and sisters; Mary Sansone, Louise Pivin and Theresa Mancieri. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State Street, Bristol. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
