Mr. John D. Barton, age 95 of Hope Street, Bristol, died Friday, August 25, 2017 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of the late Dorothy B. (Brown) Barton, his wife of 62 years, who preceded him in death in November of 2007. Born and raised in Plattsburgh, NY, he was the son of the late Lyman Guy and Ethel (Dodge) Barton, Jr. Jack served in the US Army, 10th Mountain Division, during both WWII and the Korean Conflict and then following the wars continued his service in the Army Reserve until his retirement as a Major in July of 1965, during his service he received many military awards including Combat Infantry Badge, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Metal with Bronze Star, and more. Jack remained very active in Veterans affairs and 10th Mountain Division Association and their reunions. He was well known in Bristol for his care of the American Flag and emptied the bin at the Bristol Town Hall for worn flags for many years, and holding them until proper burning ceremony could take place. He was a graduate of the Holderness School, attended Cornell University and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Business from Union College. A resident of Bristol for 49 years, he previously resided in Old Tappan, New Jersey, moving there in 1955, when he started a successful business career in Manhattan in specialty business equipment as a National Accounts Representative for most of his career and once he moved to Rhode Island was the owner-operator of Audit Controls Co., retiring in 1983. He was a member and past president of the Bristol County Lions, member and past president of the Bristol Veterans Council, served as the AMVETS representative for Veterans Administration Voluntary Services, Adjutant and member of the Anthony C. Almeida Post # 237, VFW. He was also a volunteer, along with his late wife at Blithewold Mansion and Gardens in Bristol, the VA Hospital in Providence and the RI Veterans in Bristol for many years. He is survived by three children; Virginia Barton Apostolides (Andy) of Tuxedo, NY, Joyce Barton of Bristol and John D. Barton, Jr. (Robert Andrews) of Providence, six grandchildren; Yannis Apostolides, Kristen Apostolides Gowrie (David), Suzann Apostolides, Chelsey Barton Karnes (Dwayne) and Eric Valez; four great grandchildren; Faith Apostolides, Marley Barton Karnes, Leonidas and Aella Gowrie, and a sister, Marjorie Barton Rooney, of Long Island, NY. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lyman Guy Barton, III and a sister, Eleanor Dodge Barton. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of John's life, Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 2:00 PM in the First Congregational Church of Bristol, 300 High Street, Bristol, RI. A family committal with Military Honors followed by burial will be held in Riverside Cemetery, Plattsburgh, NY. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Scholarship Fund of the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division Inc., P.O. Box 157, Houghton, NY 14744.
